Project Proposal

I am studying the mental health stigmas placed on adolescents with mental health because I want to find out how societies perceptions and attitudes towards mental health disorders have evovled, in order to understand why people didn’t accept they had a mental illness.

While mental health issues today are viewed with more courtesy, there was once a period of time when it was not accepted because people set stigmas on such issues, making those who did suffer from mental health disorders hide it and not seek help. It is important to recognize not all people face these problems and when others do it’s wrong not accept it.

As for sources I simply just used Mason’s database to locate them with key words like mental health, stigmas, and adolecents. I was able to find one on the impact a therapist has based on personal attributes and how they lead the session. A few on patients with BPD to help understand what some patients may experience and what has helped overtime. Another on the effects parents have on their child when they are going through psychotherapy for sometimes long periods of time. My last one was on mental health awareness and how individuals should approach these kinds of topics.

I learned from these articles that there are many aspects that contribute to the evolution of these issues including the practice itself having enough therapist to give access to these indivuals that need it as well as the impact parents have when it comes to accepting their child does face a mental disorder. After reading these sources I think I want to continue to research the the evolution of mental health acceptance and encourage everyone to turn to this issue like any other and advocate for it.
